The full calculation, step by step

Most calculators give you one number and no explanation. Here is exactly how your figure above is built, in the order Polish payroll applies it.

How your income fills the 2026 PIT scale

Polish income tax has two rates, 12% and 32%, applied after ZUS and the standard work costs. Here is how far your tax base reaches.

Understanding a Polish payslip

ZUS comes first, 13.71% of gross. Pension (9.76%) and disability (1.5%) contributions stop at the annual ceiling of 281,256 zł (thirty times the average wage), while the 2.45% sickness contribution has no cap. Everything in this step is deductible for income tax.

Then the health contribution, the quiet giant. 9% of income after ZUS goes to the national health fund, and since the Polski Ład reform it is no longer deductible from tax. For most employees the health contribution is bigger than the income tax itself.

Then PIT at 12% and 32%. After subtracting the standard work costs of 3,000 zł a year, tax is 12% up to 120,000 zł and 32% above, minus the 3,600 zł free-amount credit (the famous kwota wolna of 30,000 zł times 12%).

The all-in wedge is heavier than the 12% headline. ZUS plus health plus PIT puts a typical employee around 35 to 40% of gross, which surprises people who only saw the PIT rate. The bar above shows your exact split.

Accuracy and assumptions

This calculator assumes: a single resident employee under 26 exclusions not applying (standard taxpayer), one employer, and income year 2026 parameters (ZUS of 13.71% with the 281,256 zł pension/disability ceiling, 9% non-deductible health contribution, work costs of 3,000 zł, the 12% / 32% scale at 120,000 zł, free-amount credit of 3,600 zł). The ZUS ceiling is the 2026 estimate. It excludes PPK auto-enrolment, the under-26 relief, joint filing, and authors' costs. Your payslip will differ slightly; treat this as a close estimate, not payroll advice. The same engine powers the country comparisons on Fireplot (converted at a fixed 4.30 PLN/EUR).

Frequently asked questions

How is net salary calculated in Poland in 2026?

ZUS contributions of 13.71% come out first (pension and disability capped at 281,256 zloty, sickness uncapped). Then 9% health contribution on the remainder, which is not deductible. PIT is then 12% up to 120,000 zloty of tax base and 32% above, after 3,000 zloty of work costs and minus the 3,600 zloty free-amount credit.

What are the Polish PIT rates for 2026?

12% up to 120,000 zloty of tax base and 32% above. The tax-free amount is 30,000 zloty, delivered as a 3,600 zloty credit against the bill.

Why is the health contribution such a big deal?

Since the Polski Lad reform, the 9% health contribution can no longer be deducted from income tax. For a typical salary it exceeds the PIT itself, effectively making the lower band feel like 21% rather than 12%.

What is the ZUS ceiling?

Pension and disability contributions stop once your year-to-date gross passes thirty times the projected average wage, 281,256 zloty in 2026. Above it only the 2.45% sickness contribution and the health contribution continue, so high earners see their marginal deductions drop late in the year.

Is B2B better than an employment contract in Poland?

Many Polish IT contractors switch to a B2B setup with 19% linear tax, fixed ZUS and a 4.9% health contribution, which can be substantially lighter at higher incomes but gives up employment protections and paid leave. This calculator shows the employment contract (umowa o prace); the Fireplot planner models the self-employed setup.

Which rates does this calculator use, and are they current?

It uses the 2026 figures: 13.71% ZUS with the estimated 281,256 zloty ceiling, 9% health, 3,000 zloty work costs, the 12/32 scale at 120,000 zloty and the 3,600 zloty credit. Rates are reviewed when official 2026 parameters are announced.
